Since its discovery, the indiscriminate use of antibiotics in medical practice has caused, among other ailments, the development of resistant bacterial strains. Aimed at providing an updated material, it was made a bibliographic review that goes deep into the historical background of the topic and into the new standing trends at the world level to treat the cases. It was concluded that it is necessary that people be aware of the consequences derived from the irrational use of antibiotics on the part of the medical personnel or of the community, and that specific medical actions directed to the promotion of healthy lifestyles and to the prevention of diseases should be applied by using natural or traditional means of cure applied in perfect harmony with our present technological medicine.
