Participation is present in the most diverse spheres of human endeavor. It is inherent in participatory-action research, which has singular meaning in the educational context. This work responds to the type of bibliographical review research with a qualitative approach. It aims to recognize the main characteristics of participatory action research strategies ad it was based on methods, hermeneutics and content analysis. Among the main findings, the diversity of definitions of Participatory Action Research (IAP) stands out, but above all it is understood as a life strategy that includes the creation of spaces for collaborative learning and the design, execution and evaluation of actions to achieve a better quality of life. In the educational field, the IAP constitutes an opportunity to build community educational proposals, through strategies that seek to empower students, enhancing their integration and collaboration in achieving benefits for the entire community.
