MARTINEZ RODRIGUEZ, Lesnay; HERNANDEZ DELGADO, Marcia  y  RODRIGUEZ GONZALEZ, Diana Rosa. Needs in primary caregivers of hemodialyzed patients: a grounded theory study. Conrado [online]. 2022, vol.18, n.89, pp. 54-64.  Epub 30-Dic-2022. ISSN 1990-8644.

Needs constitute systems of emotions that are integrated and, in order to satisfy them, the individual has to assimilate the demands posed by the social environment. Caring for hemodialysis patients is an activity that demands the caregiver's attention and limits the satisfaction of his or her needs. The objective was to unveil tendencies in the expression of caregivers' needs in the Hemodialysis Service of Villa Clara, Cuba. The research was based on the qualitative paradigm from the Grounded Theory methodological conception. The theoretical sampling led to the selection of 20 caregivers of hemodialysis patients during the period February-March, 2020. A questionnaire of sociodemographic variables, the RAMDI and an in-depth interview were used as instruments. The Atlas.ti program was used for the organization and qualitative processing of the data. In the generation of grounded theory, the categories care, self-care, psychological care, instrumental support, school support, family support, need for quality of medical service, safety and social support were defined. The caregivers prioritize the fulfillment of care to guarantee the quality of life of the family member on hemodialysis and relegate their goals, aspirations and life projects to second place.

Palabras clave : Primary caregiver; needs; grounded theory; hemodialysis.
