Resumen

CARBALLO, Willian  y  MARROQUIN PARDUCCI, Amparo. Media literacy and news consumption among young Salvadorans in digital times. ARCIC [online]. 2020, vol.9, n.22, pp. 144-155.  Epub 24-Jun-2020. ISSN 2411-9970.

Young audiences played a key role in the communication strategy used in the campaign by the now president of El Salvador. However, despite this leading role, little is known about the news and media consumption of this population sector and about their media education needs. This article takes up the data obtained for the segment between 18 and 29 years old of a more general and extensive mixed research carried out jointly by the Mónica Herrera School of Communication and the Central American University, both Salvadorans. The results indicate that most young people inform themselves mainly via social networks and have consumed fake news, especially related to politics. The findings - framed in a current context of disinformation, digital media that emerge only in times of campaigns and anonymous accounts on social networks - force us to think about the need to establish media literacy processes that provide young people with criteria and critical capacity in the face of such content. That challenge is still pending in El Salvador.
