ABSTRACT The automatic extraction of useful knowledge and statistical information from waterpolo video sequences is a complex task currently little studied. Following the guidelines of the Observational Methodology, this paper describes the implementation of ACI-Polo, a computer system for the analysis of individual competitive activity in waterpolo games. The developed application allows, from a structural and previously defined game plan, to conduct detailed statistical analysis of the game and the identification of special micro-situations for coaches and trainers. The performance of the system, as well as the usefulness and reliability of the knowledge generated, has been tested by several experts of waterpolo in real games. Moreover, the application has favored the theoretical interpretation of complex tasks such as tactical game analysis and planning strategies, in order to improve the individualized training of waterpolo players.
