Resumen

COELHO G DA SILVA, Sandra Célia. The importance of women and perpetuation of the tradition of the pilgrimage of Bom Jesus da Lapa: context review. Rev. Cubana Edu. Superior [online]. 2021, vol.40, suppl.1  Epub 01-Nov-2021. ISSN 0257-4314.

This text is a redefining and reinterpretation of my doctoral thesis entitled «Pilgrimage of Bom Jesus da Lapa: social representation of the family and female gender identity». It aims to discuss the importance of women in the perpetuation of the tradition of the pilgrimage of Bom Jesus da Lapa, emphasizing gender relations. The research scenario was the mentioned pilgrimage, which has been held for 329 years, in the region of Bom Jesus da Lapa, located in the West of Bahia. The research participants are women pilgrims who fall in the age group of between 50 and 70 years of age and have participated, for more than five consecutive years, in the pilgrimage. They belong to five Brazilian states (Bahia, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Espírito Santo and Goiás) that register a higher participation rate in this religious event and we highlight their specificities of participation between pilgrimage coordinators and common pilgrimages. We used bibliographic, qualitative, field and documentary research as a methodology, and in data collection we applied participant observation and semi-structured interviews as a technique. Regarding the reinterpretations of the context, we bring the consequences of the study as well as the adaptations of this religious event, due to the global health crisis of COVID-19. From the speeches of the interviewed pilgrims and the theoretical contributions used, we conclude that the Pilgrimage of Bom Jesus da Lapa is a space for social representation of the family and of the female gender identity, observing a contrast in the reframing of the role and profile of the women who part-take in the pilgrimage o, and the confirmation of its importance in the perpetuation of that tradition.
