One of the ways to evaluate the adecuate use of contraception and the efficiency of family planning is by knowing the effectiveness and continuity of the contraceptive methods. The objective of this paper is to show the effectiveness, abandonment, and failure rates of contraception among women from the municipally of Diez de Octubre. The information was obtained from a project called Contraception and Associated Factors, financed by the Programme of Human Reproduction of the World Health Organization. The history of the use of contraceptives of 876 women was utilized. The indicators were obtained by the life table. The failure rates found ranged/from 12.67 per 100 episodes for the traditional methods to 5.26 per 100 episodes for IUD. As a method of initiation the IUD had a failure rate of 18.01 por 100 episodes. It was found a significant differences at 0.0001 (with the Lee-Disu's test) for the behavior of failure and abandonment in relation to the number of children and abortions previous to the IUD use. It is concluded that the IUD failure rates are one of the highest compared wih countries having information and that both, the failure and the abandoment of the IUD are elevated. It is recommended to review the instruction regarding the IUD use for the benefit of the reproductive health of women and for increasing the effectiveness of these methods.
