BARRIOS FLORES, Luis Fernando. El internamiento psiquiátrico en España: de Valencia a Zaragoza (1409-1808)*. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2002, vol.28, n.2, pp. 224-245. ISSN 1561-3127.
In 1409, a Mercedarian friar named P. Jofré inaugurated what was considered by a large part of the doctrine followers as the first psychiatric hospital as such in the history. Regardless of the controversies about its primacy, it is true that this establishment is an example of a humanitarian tradition which, materialized in the creation of a number of psychiatric institutions in Spain and America, lasted until the beginning of the 19th century and which influenced- in this case through the descriptions of the psychiatric hospital of Zaragoza- the work of Philippe Pinel, the well-known leader of the psychiatric reform. Therefore, the mental hospitals in Valencia and Zaragoza are paradigms of the starting and decline of the psychiatric assistance in Spain from 1409 to 1808.
