Resumen

FERNANDEZ, Leticia et al. A case-control study on prostate cancer risks. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2005, vol.31, n.3, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3127.

This paper was aimed at determining the role of some genetic, hormonal, lifestyle and environmental factors in the risk of clinically manifest prostate cancer in Havana, Cuba. The cases (n=273) were residents of the City of Havana, aged under 85 years and diagnosed from 1998 to 2000, with histological or cytological checking of prostate cancer. The controls (n=254) were age-paired selected from the same hospital as the case. Interview was the source of information. Risk estimation was made by conditional logistic regression. No statistically significant association was observed between race and prostate cancer risk (OR=1,30, IC95%; 0,92-1,84; also the association was not significant between smoking and prostate cancer risk (OR=0,82 IC 95% 0,58-1,16). Positive association of prostate cancer risk with both sexually transmitted diseases (p=0,01) and age at occurrence of these diseases (p=0,06) was observed. No differences were found in neither the age at first sexual relation (p=0,111) nor the number of sexual partners (p=0,48). A significant association was also observed among the risk of suffering prostate cancer and any previous sexually transmitted disease, lack of physical activity from 45 to 50 years of age and the frequency of sexual relations over ten times a week

Palabras clave : prostate cancer; risk factors; relative risk; case-controls; multicenter study.
