Resumen

RIGOL RICARDO, Orlando. Introduction of contraceptive intrauterine devices in Cuba. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2006, vol.32, n.1, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3127.

A historical account of the use of contraceptive intrauterine device since Grafenberg, in 1920, with his initial experiences and his publication in 1930 is made. The experiences of Ota e Ishihama in Japan, and of Opepenheimer, in Israel, with his publication in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, in 1959, are also included in this paper. The introduction of polyethylene multiplied the models of IUDs and the use of inert intrauterine devices (IUDs). The contribution made by Zipper allowed the use of bioactive IUDs with cooper that was incorported to various models of IUDs.The medicated IUDs and later the IUDs with multiload appeared in the 1980s. In Cuba, and by initiative of Professor Lajonchere, it was made an experiment at “General Calixto García” University Hospital with the nylon ring designed by Zipper and Sanhuez. The results were satisfactory (it was my thesis for becoming 1st Degree Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology presented on February 2nd, 1965) and its use was generalized in the southeastern region due to the existance of greater needs in that area. It was extended to the whole country, giving an answer to the need of contraception of an important part of our population for years
