GUANCHE GARCELL, Humberto; SUAREZ ENRIQUEZ, Tomás; GUTIERREZ GARCIA, Francisco  y  MARTINEZ QUESADA, Carlos. Health condition of professional drivers who drive their vehicles on Via Blanca highway. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2006, vol.32, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3127.

As part of a study aimed at detecting risk factors in professional drivers for traffic accidents, a descriptive observational study of those who drive their automotive vehicles on Via Blanca highway was carried out in which the evaluation of their health status was included. Blood pressure was measured in 832 drivers together with a well-structured interview that identified other medical conditions. Frequencies and their respective 95 % confidence intervals were estimated in each category of the variables. Average age of drivers was 42.49 years; 42 (5.04 %) were 60 years and over. 25.44 % (confidence interval 95 %, 21.65-29.23) told that they suffered some kind of disease, being blood hypertension (12.15 %), bronchial asthma (5.18 %), diabetes mellitus (1.99 %), peptic ulcer (1.68 %, heart diseases (1.61 %) and low back pain (1.26 %) the most frequent ones. 18.37 % (IC, 95 %, 14.93-21.80) regularly took medications, mainly antihypertensives, bronchodilators, hypoglycemic agents, vasodilators, psychopharmaceuticals and antihistaminics. 69.38 % of the drivers had high blood pressure figures, of which 33.78 % suffered hypertension II. Health problems and the use of medications in professional drivers who drive their vehicles on the most dangerous highway in the country are frequent risk factors, so it is necessary to strengthen the medical evaluation system of professional drivers
