Resumen

RIVERA BARRAGAN, María del Rosario. Nutritional education, towards a social perspective in Mexico. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2007, vol.33, n.1, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3127.

The state of nutrition of individuals is a fundamental element of the community´s human capital, and so the importance of finding out the population´s nutritional characteristics and of identifying the problems that might exist. Since Mexico is a country of great contrast where geographic, economic, social and cultural heterogeneity of its population prevails and the available information is limited, the task ahead is not simple. The objective of this paper was to analyze the situation of nutritional education in that country from a social perspective. The main nutritional problems in several population groups, obtained from municipal, regional and national surveys, were overweight, anemia and micronutrient deficiency. Throughout the years, several measures have been adopted and nutritional programs have been created to help to the solution of present problems. Currently, nutritional education gets more strenght because it represents the task of improving nutrition and promoting better feeding habits favoring health. Various institutions involved in taking care of the population´s health have separately tried to guide the population in this respect. If the efforts are not well-coordinated, the final results will be poor. The impact of food education and guidance programs on the receiving population has not yet been assessed, which does not allow giving an objective opinion on their usefulness. From a social perspective, a lot of efforts have been made but generally their scope has not been far-reaching
