Dengue presently causes extensive epidemics in the Americas and in other parts of the world, mainly in poor countries where there are certain conditions for its development, and also it is the cause of big economic and social damages. Therefore, it is necessary to update this topic in a comprehensive way in terms of dengue distribution worldwide, the situation in the Americas, its etiological agent and vector. The population growth, urbanization and deficiencies in environmental sanitation were analyzed since they are the main risk factors. The biological cycle of vector, the period of transmissibility, clinical picture and main complications were studied in depth. The aim was to contribute to better know the disease in order to reduce its incidence in the countries of this area. To this end, a literature review was made on the basis of published articles using Yahoo, Medline, Google, searchers, by means of the key words dengue, viral genome, Aedes aegyti, epidemiology, clinical aspects and reservoir.
