Introduction: periodontal disease, after dental caries, is considered one of the most prevalent diseases affecting the oral cavity. Objective: to characterize chronic inflammatory periodontal disease in an adult population of a policlinic from Encrucijada. Methods: an epidemiological, transversal and descriptive study was carried out in a population over nineteen years belonging to this health area, from October, 2007 to May, 2008. The universe was constituted by 1082 people; from these people, a number of 299 were randomly selected as a sample. Results: gingivitis predominated in the group from 19 to 34 years. All people who suffered from gingivitis (90 in total) had a regular oral hygiene, and those who suffered from periodontal disease had a bad oral hygiene. Conclusions: periodontal disease was more frequent in white people, and in both sexes with similar results; the most affected group with gingivitis was between 19 to 34 years. There was an association between oral hygiene and periodontal state, as well as, smoking habit and time since smoking.
