In the exercise of nutrition, it is essential to determine energy expenditure, for the correct estimation of energy requirements; In the clinical field, the most widely used technique is indirect calorimetry, which is an accurate and precise method, but relatively expensive, requiring trained personnel and rigorous performance conditions. The objective of this study was to describe the current state of knowledge of calorimetry and encourage the application of this method for the treatment of patients, it is a descriptive documentary study, using as a sample the scientific documents in which the description of the calorimetry. The Google Scholar search engine was used, to compile information, the key statement "Calorimetry" was used. The term "Calorimetry" generated 8,595 results, 5.05% met the inclusion criteria. The application of calorimetry improves the treatment, evolution and prognosis of hospitalized patients, it should be implemented to a greater extent in tertiary hospitals in the country.
