Resumen

CANEDO ANDALIA, Rubén. Virtual center for medical learning and research. Rev. cuba. inf. cienc. salud [online]. 2014, vol.25, n.2, pp. 220-233. ISSN 2307-2113.

Background: informatization of society is impossible without information literacy. Accordingly, in 2007 Infomed started a Program for the Information Literacy of the National Health System, aimed at developing information competencies in all health professionals. At that moment, a strategy was required which would realize the potential of the novel information and communication technologies for the achievement of the objectives set. An instrument was necessary which would support a decentralized self-education process and would empower students and teachers alike. Objective: present the main components and characteristics of the Virtual Center for Medical Learning and Research. Results: the Center has three main components: Advanced readings on health information literacy, a comprehensive bibliography updated and systematized for teaching, consultation and guidance on health information management topics; the Editorial Academy, a resource center offering information on the preparation, arbitration, drafting and editing of scientific papers; and the Health Sciences Observatory, a service monitoring the presence of Cuban health scientific production in large international databases. Conclusions: the creation of the Center realizes the aspirations of the health sector in the development of information competencies required for its daily activities, and paves the way for the sustainability and progress of the Program for the Information Literacy of the National Health System by enabling the self-preparation of professionals according to their particular needs.
