The purpose of this article is to examine the contribution of tourism to the empowerment of Christmas sphere artisans in Tlalpujahua and its contribution to the local development of this Mexican municipality. Based on a qualitative methodology that included in-depth interviews with 49 craftswomen, five dimensions of empowerment were analyzed; the results show the impact on their environment through changes in their daily roles, greater employment opportunities, access to training and financing to create microenterprises. It is concluded that, nevertheless, traditional schemes prevail that limit their full empowerment despite the progress they have made during this process, of which most of them are not aware and only visualize it as personal improvement.
