A study was undertook on 97 diabetes patients (December 1996 - December 1997) from the health area of the Capdevila policlinics. The more frequent debut age was from 45 to 59 years old (43.3 %) and clinical duration was longer than 15 years (38.2 %). There was a prevalence of type 2 diabetes with obesity (5.7 %) and of female sex (68.8 %). The most widely used treatment was with glibenclamide (42.3 %). Among the most frequent associated diseases we found arterial hypertension (54.6 %), cardiovascular diseases (22.7 %) and vascular encephalic accidents (4.1 %). The 26.8 % of the cases presented retinopathy and the 2.1 % chronic renal failure. Only 2 patients presented deficient metabolism control-associated blindness and there was no amputated patient. Diabetes education was deficient: 64 % of the patients received no diabetes courses and 50.5 did not make Benedicts.
