Resumen

ARDILA MEDINA, Carlos Martín; GUZMAN ZULUAGA, Isabel Cristina  y  ARBELAEZ MONTOYA, María Patricia. Efficacy of Moxifloxacin on periodontitis. Rev haban cienc méd [online]. 2009, vol.8, n.3, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1729-519X.

A group of predominantly gram-negative , anaerobic bacterias are associated with initiation and progression of periodontal disease. Microorganism strongly implicated as etiologic agents of periodontitis include Porphyromonas Gingivalis, Aggregatibacter Actinomycetemcomitans and Tannerella forsythensis. The primary aim of periodontal treatment is to reduce the infection, resolve inflammation and prevent any further destruction. Antibiotics adjunctive can be used to improve treatment outcomes in patients with severe chronic periodontitis and aggressive periodontitis. The range of antibiotics used to treat periodontal infections is quite extensive including the tetracyclines, metronidazole and the combination with amoxicillin, azythromicin, clindamycin etc. Problems of bacterial resistance suggest alternatives as moxifloxacin that showed activity against gram-positives, anaerobes, planktonic microorganism as well as bacteria located within a biofilm or intracellularly.

Palabras clave : periodontitis; antibiotics; moxifloxacin; microbiology; therapy..
