Universities as knowledge organizations have a high impact on the economic and social development of the countries, a condition that demands them, a high quality and relevance of the academic products they offer. The strategic alignment of the elements of the management system, expressed in their coordination, cooperation and synchronization within the framework of the institutional strategy, has a particular influence on this. There are different ways of approaching strategic alignment in universities, so the selection of a viable alternative to it is a complex decision that requires a logical process and techniques that not only contribute to its argumentation on a scientific basis, but also, to its viability. This article aims to propose a procedure to contribute to the strategic alignment in the management of universities, which includes the identification of stakeholders, university processes, organizational redesign and the proposal of a control tool based on the balanced scorecard for university management.
