Resumen
ARMAS PEREZ, Bárbaro Agustín et al. Thoracoplasty: a little known or forgotten technique? Experience in two hospitals in Camaguey province. Rev Cubana Cir [online]. 2007, vol.46, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-2945.
A descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on 16 patients operated on by thoracoplasty technique from October 1995 to November 2005. Surgeries were performed at “Amalia Simoni” and “Martín Chang Puga” university hospitals located in Camaguey city and Nuevitas respectively. Thoracoplasty was indicated because of the presence of bronchopleural fistulae in roughly two thirds of the patients (68,75 %) and of the attempt to reduce the thoracic cavity as a complement to a previous operation. Most of thoracoplasties were performed in the right hemithorax after pneumonectomy and in a second surgery. Resection of two or three costal segments predominated. Despite the high mortality rate, the healing index was good in the rest of cases. Supplementary thoracoplasty is the most indicated at present and we agree that wide and deforming thoracoplasties are not longer so much practiced in spite of the fact that some patients still need them
