Resumen

PINO-PEREZ, Oriela; ROJAS-FERNANDEZ, Miriam M.; SANCHEZ-PEREZ, Yaíma  y  ESPINOSA-CASTANO, Ivette. Antibacterial activity of essential oils obtained from plants of Cuban origin against Streptococcus suis. Rev Salud Anim. [online]. 2018, vol.40, n.3 ISSN 2224-4700.

The aim of this work was to determine the antibacterial activity of essential oils obtained from plants of Cuban origin against Streptococcus suis serotype 2. The essential oils from Ruta chalepensis L., Piper auritum Kunth, Ocimum sanctum L., and Melaleuca quinquenervia (Cav) S.T. Blake were obtained by hydrodistillation using a Clevenger type-apparatus. The antibacterial activity of each essential oil was evaluated by the agar diffusion method and Ciprofloxacin was used as control. All the evaluated oils inhibited the growth of S. suis. The essential oils from R. chalepensis and P. auritum showed the highest activity, superior to that of Ciprofloxacin. The treatments with the essential oils obtained from O. sanctum and M. quinquenervia lightly inhibited the bacterium. The essential oils from R. chalepensis and P. auritum have potential for the development of new antimicrobials to control S. suis.

Palabras clave : essential oil; Melaleuca; Ocimum; Piper; Ruta; Streptococcus suis.
