ABSTRACT This paper presents a power system vulnerability analysis model using a metaheuristic optimization approach. In its traditional version, the vulnerability problem is approached using a lineal model of the network and considering only the attack of lines or transformers. The proposed model in this paper considers not only the attack of lines or transformers but also the one of generators. Furthermore, a nonlinear model of the network is considered, allowing more approximate solutions to reality. The proposed model is solved by the GRASP (Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedures) metaheuristic technique. The solution of the model allows identifying a set of contingencies that make the power system more vulnerable. This information helps the power system operator to take protective actions on the system and reduce risk.
