Resumen

DE LA PARTE PEREZ, Lincoln. Valor del atracurium en la intubación de la tráquea. Rev Cubana Pediatr [online]. 2003, vol.75, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3119.

The intubation technique for the child requires a deep muscle relaxation in a short period of time, with a minimal hemodynamic repercussion. Although intubation may be accomplished shortly after the administration of succinylcholine, its use is associated with a number of side effects that are unacceptable in the child scheduled for elective surgery. The non-depolarizing muscle relaxants formerly available in our country delay too much and are not used for tracheal intubation in most of the hospitals. The introduction of a new non-depolarizing relaxant that begins acting in a short period of time and has minimal hemodynamic effects provides a solution to many of our former difficulties. Atracurium possesses a number of advantages for the quick intubation of high risk patients in which hemodynamic stability is needed and it may become a succinylcholine substitute for muscular relaxation in elective surgeries. A study of the conditions for tracheal intubation was made in a group of children with heart problems after being administered atracurium at an average dose of 0,6mg/kg of body weight. The required average time for an adequate muscle relaxation ranged from 90 to 120 seconds and a maintenance dosage was required at 30 minutes as an average. Neither hemodynamic effects nor complications attributable to the use of this muscle relaxant were observed.
