A prospective and descriptive study was conducted among the inpatients with a diagnosis of chronologically prolonged pregnancy (more than 42 weeks) at the Gynecoobstetric Teaching Hospital of Matanzas during 1993. Of a total of 3 652 births occurred, 150 were more than 42 weeks, for an incidence of 4.1. 100 of them were selected to be part of the sample under study, included in a statistical model that allowed the conformation of statistical tables and the comparison with the bibliography reviewed on this regard. It was applied the percentage statistical method with square double-channel tables, where had a value x 0.5 for the prefixed percentiles. Two biophysical variables, monitoring and biophysical profile, were used to work. A correlation was established with variables such as the type of delivery, the physical characteristics of the amniotic fluid, and the Apgar score of the newborn. It was shown the efficacy of these two paraclinical methods: monitoring and biophysical profile. The latter had the highest index of reliability or innocuosness. As to the studied variables, there was a predominance of the eutopic delivery and of the clear fluid. Those cases with meconium fluid influenced neither on the perinatal mortality nor on the low Apgar score.
