Resumen

BORREGO LOPEZ, Julio et al. Value of fine needle aspiration biopsy for the diagnosis of breast lesions. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 1997, vol.23, n.2, pp. 81-85. ISSN 1561-3062.

In order to demostrate the usefulness of fine neddle aspiration biopsy, 100 cases who were diagnosed as having a breast mass by clinical and/or echographic examination were studies. Patients underwent a fine neddle aspiration biopsy and afterwards the lesion was removed by a surgical procedure, and the result of this biopsy was used as criteria of accuracy. Certain epidemiologic aspects, as well as the opinion of the patients regarding this procedure and its complications, are also assessed. As a results, it is concluded that most of the bening lesions of the breast occurred before 45 years of age and that the occurrence of malignant lesions increases from 48 years of age, and over. No complications were observed after the biopsy, and patients considered this procedure as uncomfortable one but not painful. Fine neddle aspiration biopsy finally obtained a sensitivity of 88.89 and a predictive positive value of 94.12 with an effectiveness index of 0.86 suggesting that its results are quite satisfactory for the diagnosis of a malignant lesion of the breast.
