Resumen
LL .CARBONELL, J et al. Vaginal misoprostol for early second trimester abortion. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2000, vol.26, n.1, pp. 28-35. ISSN 1561-3062.
In this paper, the authors try to prove the effectiveness and safety of misoprostol without the systematic curettage after expulsion in early second trimester abortions, that is, in gestations between l3 and l5 weeks. A group of 151 women with gestations from 85 to 105 days received 800 mg of vaginal miprostol every 24 hours up to a maximum of 3 doses without preventive systematic curettage. The evaluated variables include successful abortion (complete abortion with no need of preventive systematic curettage, side effects, mean times of expulsion and vaginal bleeding). Complete abortion occurred in 121/151 (80 %, 95 % CI 73.87) women. Haemoglobin reduction was statisticaly significant (p=0.0001) but had no clinical relevance: 11.8 mg/dL (DS 0.9) before treatment and 11.4 mg/dL (DS 1.0) later. No statistically significant differences were found between the rates of success for any of the women's characteristics. Vaginal bleeding lasted 6 +3 days, stains 6 + 3 and total bleeding 12 + 5 days (mean ll days, range 1,29 days). It is stressed that the mean time of expulsion in 80 % of the cases, the fact that no postabortion systematic curettage was necessary, the clinically significant loss of haemoglobin and the success rate obtained showed that vaginal misoprostol may be an alternative to interrupt gestations between the 13 th and the 15 th wek.
