With the objective of studying the possible effect of subdermal “Norplant” implant on the lipid and lipoprotein metabolism during the 3 first years of use in 33 healthy females aged 21-32 years, blood samples were taken from the 5th to 8th day of their menstrual cycles prior to the insertion of the implant, and later annually, to determine the levels of total cholesterol, tryglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and apolipoproteins A1 and B. The atherogenesis indexes were calculated: LDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol; HDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol; HDL-cholesterol/LDL-cholesterol and Apo Al/Apo B. A decrease in the average cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels was observed during these three years, but without being statistically significant.
