Resumen

VILLARES ALVAREZ, Icilany et al. Anemia and iron deficiency in pregnant women from an urban area in Cienfuegos municipality. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2006, vol.32, n.1, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3062.

A cross-sectional analytical study of 150 pregnant women, who were randomly chosen from the total number of pregnant females living in an urban area in Cienfuegos municipality, was conducted. The objective was to determine the relation between anemia and sociodemographic, obstetric history and nutritional habits variables. The participants were interviewed to gather information and also lab-tested to detect anemia and iron deficiency. SPSS statistical package version 11.0 served to process the collected data. Descriptive statistical tests, mean comparisons and a logistic regression model were used. A level of significance equivalent to 5 % was agreed on in all cases. Anemia and iron deficiency were more frequent in pregnant females over 30 years of age, in those classified as low weighted and those having an intergenesic interval under 2 years and higher number of pregnancies and abortions. However, when using the logistic regression model, the variables that have statistical significance were the following: number of times the pregnant women eat meat weekly (p=0.001), number of times they have egg as meal (p=0.002), hemoglobin figures at the beginning of pregnancy (p=0.001), twin pregnancies (p=0.006) and trimester of pregnancy (p=0.031).

Palabras clave : anemia; pregnancy; iron deficiency.
