Resumen

ROBAINA CASTELLANOS, Gerardo; RIESGO RODRIGUEZ, Solangel De La C.  y  ROBAINA CASTELLANOS, Roberto. Predictive value of neurological sequelae of the neurological examination and the brain ultrasound in asphyctic neonates. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2006, vol.32, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3062.

A descriptive, longitudinal and prospective study was conducted aimed at determining the predictive value of the sequelae of the initial neurological examination (INE) and the transfontanelar brain ultrasound (TBU) performed in the neonatal period, in relation to neurodevelopment during the first year of life corrected in asphyctic patients followed up at the department of neurodevelopment of the Provincial Gynecoobstetric Teaching Hospital of Matanzas. The sample consisted of 116 patients, of whom 45.6 % had sequelae. The INE and TBU results were correlated in most of the cases with the neurological evolution, although both examinations had a low sensitivity. The specificity, the predictive value of the positive test and the predictive value of the negative test were high in both studies. It was concluded that both are good predictors of neurological sequelae, eventhough they are not the ideal ones. Therefore, emphasis was made on the importance of the follow-up of these patients.
