In order to analyze the morbimortality from intraabdominal infection of gynecological origin in our environment, a retrospective and analytical study was conducted at “Comandante Pinares” General Teaching Hospital, in San Cristóbal, from 2000 to 2002. The patients admitted for presenting this type of infection that required surgical treatment (study group n = 44) and an equal number of patients with the same entity that were cured only with medical treatment (control group) were studied. Variables such as age, toxic habits, some gynecological previous history, symptomatology, operative diagnosis and postoperative complications were analyzed. The following statistic methods were used: percentage, mean, Chi square test, odds ratio (OR) and percentage attributable risk (PAR). It was concluded that the mean age was 31.9 for the study group (DS=7.1), and 29.2 for the control group (DS = 8.4). The toxic habits (OR=4.2 CI-95 % 1.5:11.7), the episodes of pelvic inflammatory disease (OR=4.0 CI-95 % 0.5:27.7), the previous history of sexually transmitted infection (OR=2.0 CI-95 % 0.4:9.8), and bacterial vaginosis (OR=2.0 CI-95 % 0.5:7.7) proved to be risk factors.100 % of the patients referred abdominal pain.
