LUGO SANCHEZ, Ana María. Characterization of postpartum uterine bleeding patients where misoprostol was used. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2014, vol.40, n.2, pp. 145-154. ISSN 0138-600X.
Introduction: puerperal uterine bleeding or postpartum hemorrhage is the leading cause of maternal mortality in poor countries. Objective: this paper aims to characterize patients with immediate PPH and the use of misoprostol in them. Methods: a descriptive, longitudinal, retrospective study was conducted in patients who had immediate postpartum hemorrhage, and who did not respond to ergometrine or oxytocin at the Gynecobstetric Teaching Hospital in Guanabacoa from January to December 2011. 37 medical records of patients who had uterine atony were evaluated; 32 of them were selected (sample) who reported this event in the first 4 h postpartum. Results: the study found that out of 32 women, 53 % were multiparous, 30 % of patients with immediate PPH were 37 and 42 weeks gestational age and 22 of them had normal vaginal delivery. Prolonged latent phase was not significantly. Conclusions: misoprostol is recommended to be used during the immediate postpartum hemorrhage due to its verified effectiveness.
