An interventional study of the level of knowledge of the nursing personnel working at the sterilization department was conducted as a strategy to increase the quality of the attention given to patients and relatives at "Josue País García" Teaching Polyclinic, from January to June, 1999, in Santiago de Cuba. The universe consisted of 91 female nurses that worked at family physician's office. The sample included 61 nurses, accounting for 51.5 %. It was applied a printed questionnaire that served as a competence test with variable of interest. It was concluded that the process of sterilization and desinfection is vital for nursing personnel, reception and classification. It is in the first place within the right answers, as well as their opinion about the expiration of the sterile material at 72 hours. Most of the personnel proved to know about sterilization and classification.
