Resumen
REBOSO PEREZ, José G et al. Anemia en un grupo de niños de 14 a 57 meses de edad, aparentemente sanos. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2003, vol.29, n.2, pp. 128-131. ISSN 1561-3127.
The prevalence of anemia was studied among 239 children aged 14-47 months that attended day care centers of Centro Habana municipality aimed at evaluating the changes occurring in iron nutritional state, starting from the consumption of FORFERR dietary supplement. The concentration of hemoglobin (Hb) and the mean corpuscular volume (MCV) were determined by an ABX MICROS 60.OT automatic hematology counter. Of the total of evaluated children, 15.5 % had hemoglobin values under 110 g/L, which is indicative of anemia. In children up to 24 months old the frequency of anemia was 47.5 %; in the group 25-48 months old, 9.4 %; and in those over 48 months old, 2.1 %. In all of them there was a mild predominance of anemia. Of the total of children, 44.2 % presented MCV values lower than 78 fl. Microcytosis was found in 100 % of the anemic children, which is characteristic of iron deficiency. No child had MCV values over 100 fl. The integration of actions of the National Program for the Prevention and Control of Anemia and Iron Deficiency seems to favor the decrease of the frequency of anemia in this age group, which presents one of the highest prevalences in the country
