ALVAREZ VAZQUEZ, Luisa y SALOMON AVICH, Nelli. Abortion in teenagers within the legal contex. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2012, vol.38, n.1, pp. 45-53. ISSN 0864-3466.
Introduction: the health care provided to the Cuban women by highly scientific professionals is full, universal and free, where the vulnerable groups are prioritized. The cessation of unwanted pregnancy in all women presupposes their personal willingness. There are various ways of thinking related to this decision. Objectives: to describe the assessments made by the teenager and the social actors linked to the decisions on abortion. Methods: cuban health statistics as well as the results of several qualitative research works were used. Results: in Cuba, many researchers have considered abortion as a health problem due to its complexity and other related effects. The results showed poor knowledge on the role played by the partner of the woman having abortion. The teenager and her family are the ones who generally take that decision. The physicians pointed out the machist conceptions reflected in debates about protection; as well as the existence of a strategy aimed at unwanted pregnancy prevention and included in the Cuban programs of sexual education and health, where the importance of reaching gender equality and equity is underlined. However, the expected results are yet to be achieved since it is necessary that all the social actors help to attain this goal. Conclusions: the ways of thinking of different participants, particularly the educational and health service providers, are not always in line with the necessary actions for effective pregnancy prevention. There exists the need of drawing up strategies to take more effective actions.
