GARCIA SALMAN, Jorge Daniel. Considerations on Natural and Traditional Medicine, the scientific method and the Cuban health system. Rev Cubana Salud Pública [online]. 2013, vol.39, n.3, pp. 540-555. ISSN 0864-3466.
Natural and Traditional Medicine, instead of a sum of therapeutic modalities not involved into the conventional medicine, is a body of knowledge with an holistic approach either to the human being and to the health-disease process, different though complementary to the typical reductionistic approach of conventional medicine. Its scientific nature has been based in i) the development of clinic methods directed to diagnosing disarmonies, rather than diseases, ii) the compensation of these disarmonies through therapeutic resources specific to the actual presentation of a condition into the patient, rather than specific for the condition itself, and iii) the improvement of patient healing rather than curing diseases, perhaps less dramatically than conventional medicine, but eliciting lower adverse effects. The complex nature of prescriptions in Natural and Traditional Medicine make them difficult to evaluate through clinical trials not regarding neither such nature, nor the active behavior of the patient in the outcome and the contextual issues contributing to this outcome, more than has been commonly assumed. Finally, an analysis of main characteristics of the scientific method according to recent reflections, suggested that integration between both types of medicine in our healthcare system is not only possible but also pertinent.
