Resumen

Introduction:

the study of the pedagogical institutions within the national or regional context makes it easier to determine how a collective of teachers establishes an academic tradition that contributes, over time, essential aspects for the sciences of education.

Objective:

to identify the conformation and pedagogical development of the teaching staff to the training of specialists in Internal Medicine.

Materials and methods:

historical educational research on the staff of internists of the Teaching Clinical Surgical Hospital Jose Ramon Lopez Tabrane, from 1969 to 1995. Techniques of historical research were used such as: documental analysis, bibliographic record and criticism of the sources; the focus group discussion, semi structured interview and testimonies were used within the empirical methods; a period of study and two stages were established for the pedagogical considerations, and their characteristics were shown.

Results:

85 % of the teaching records of the professors and residents, 32 records of subject collective, 17 evaluations of the scientific-pedagogical staff, and 21 records of the Internal Medicine service were consulted. The direct participant observation of the members of the focal group discussions allowed to gather the information necessary to achieve the research objective after the triangulation of the data.

Conclusions:

the genesis and development of the professorial staff and the specialization according to the existent historical context were supported through historical notes, and the information collected on teaching was triangulated.
