ORBEA LOPEZ, Marbelis. Science-technology nexus, its impact on the demographic transition and on the decrease in mortality of children under five. Rev Nov Pob [online]. 2023, vol.19, n.37, pp. 23-47. Epub 15-Jun-2023. ISSN 1817-4078.
Science, in its alliance with technology and innovation, constitutes an extraordinary material force. The Center for Demographic Studies (CEDEM) is a scientific research center of the University of Havana that, in its work, conducts research in the field of demographic analysis and population and development studies, with particular attention to territorial development and local. Fertility, mortality and migrations are the fundamental elements that control the evolution of populations and become the demographic variables par excellence for demographic studies. Of these, mortality is the study variable of the author of this essay. It aims to analyze the existing links between science and technology and how this has affected both the demographic transition and the decrease in mortality of children under five.
The central objectives revolve around characterizing science and technology as processes linked to social, political, cultural, and economic determinations, among others; assess the impact of science and technology on the demographic transition and analyze the mortality of children under five, as a research topic, from a STS approach. It concludes with the identification of some current challenges to overcome the traditional vision of science and assume it from a Science, Technology and Society approach, including studies carried out from Demographic Sciences and Population Studies.
