ARAUJO GONZALEZ, Rafael Emilio  y  HERRERA MASO, Juán Rubén. Road accidents in Havana 2015-2020: consequences and sociodemographic characteristics. Rev Nov Pob [online]. 2023, vol.19, n.37, pp. 346-376.  Epub 15-Jun-2023. ISSN 1817-4078.

The so-called traffic accidents and their consequences constitute one of the main socioeconomic and public health problems in the world. The work presented seeks to evaluate the evolution of the accident rate, its consequences and sociodemographic characteristics in traffic accidents in Havana during the six-year period 2015-2020. This is a descriptive, exploratory and correlational study of the evolution of the main indicators of road safety (accidents, fatalities and injuries) as well as the sociodemographic characteristics of those affected in the six-year period 2015 and 2020 from the databases of victims of the National Revolutionary Police. Rate calculation and analysis methods, and statistical data processing and analysis techniques were used with the SPSS version 25 system. The existence of male excess mortality and injuries was confirmed. The occurrence of the greatest number of deaths and injuries was found in young and productive ages with the corresponding years of life potentially lost (YPLP) and damage to individuals, families, institutions and society. The existence of differentials by skin color, educational level, marital status, and occupation regarding the consequences of accidents (fatalities, damages, and injuries) was identified. The importance of evaluating the relationship between demographic facts (deceased, injured) and their rates depending on their correlation with the size of their corresponding populations and their differentials according to sex, age groups and territories is concluded.

Palabras clave : accident rate; fatalities; injured; damage; mortality.
