Introduction:

Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic autoimmune disease that affects different organs and organ systems. Oral and gastrointestinal involvement generates discomfort in patients, decreasing their perception of quality of life.

Method:

A basic, non-experimental, descriptive and cross-sectional cohort research was carried out. The universe consisted of 146 patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis according to the criteria of the American College of Rheumatology. The sample was made up of a total of 107 patients. A questionnaire was applied to identify the presence of oral involvement and gastrointestinal involvement.

Results:

Mean age 63.58 years of age, predominance of female patients (65.09%) and with an evolution time of less than 3 years (46.23%). 29.24% of the patients presented oral manifestations and 65.09% gastrointestinal manifestations. Both groups of manifestations appeared more frequently in patients with more than 5 years of evolution of the disease.

Conclusions:

There is a low percentage of appearance of oral manifestations in patients with rheumatoid arthritis; within which the temporomandibular involvement constitutes the main exponent.
