In times of pandemic and seclusion, the student depends much more on his own strategies for learning English. It is the purpose of this paper, from an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional design, to assess the development of students' communicative competence based on elements of cultural historical theory based on the course topics and the critical thinking offered by the activities and the texts from the book Life. A mixed conception of the research was used in the methodology. The main result has been the description of the student's critical thinking from textual comprehension to oral production. It was concluded that there is a relationship between the two facilitated by elements of cultural historical theory.
