The article explains, substantiates and illustrates the principles underlying the development of the intercultural competence in the teaching-learning process of English as a foreign language in the Cuban context. The definition of these principles is a result of the research project The improvement of the teaching of English in elementary, junior and senior high and higher levels of education, carried out at the School of Foreign Language Education of Enrique José Varona University of Pedagogical Sciences. Its completion was based on the systematization of the bibliography on the topic and the researchers’ professional experiences.
