The way of managing the university system has been in academic analysis in the last quarter of a century with an unusual force. University governance is a scientific category currently under construction due to the efforts of multiple researchers across the continent. The article aims to systematize the main elements that characterize autonomy and university governance in Latin America after a decade of significant theoretical and practical contributions. The methodology used is based on the analysis of academic literature published in journals of high scientific impact, determining the main elements contributing to the integration of knowledge around the object of study. The conclusions point to the need to continue contributing to university governance, develop interdisciplinary research, and promote the generalization of the results.
