RODRIGUEZ FERNANDEZ, Ana Luisa; BARRETO PENIE, Jesús; SANTANA PORBEN, Sergio y LLANES CESPEDES, Ruperto. Evaluación nutricional prequirúrgica de niños atendidos en el Hospital Pediátrico Universitario "William Soler". Rev Cubana Pediatr [online]. 2003, vol.75, n.3, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3119.
The nutritional status of children of both sexes aged 2 to 14 years, who were proposed for elective surgery because of some pathologies such as anorectal malformation, Hirschpung´s disease, esophagic atressia and esophagic stenosis, among others, was studied. The patients were evaluated by clinical, anthropometric and biochemical parameters. 85 % of children did not show signs of defective malnutrition. The weight-height ratio in 77,5 % of children was within the normal range whereas 10 % of children were overweighed. Plasma albumin figures in 75 % of patients were under 35 g/l. There were no children with serious protein depletion. 70 % of infants showed Kwashiorkor-type malnutrition, 2,5 % marasmic malnutrition and 5 % mixed. 22,5 % was within the normal range. A high portion of children showed in the preoperative subclinical forms of malnutrition whose importance can not be ignored in the postoperative recovery.
