Resumen

LOPEZ DIAZ, Zoila. Partial glossectomy in trisomy 21: incidence of oral and respiratory infections before and after surgery. Rev Cubana Pediatr [online]. 2007, vol.79, n.3, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3119.

The incidence of oral and respiratory infections in children with trisomy 21 or Down syndrome, before and after surgical treatment of the characteristic macroglossia of this syndrome, was studied for 10 years. All the patients were assessed and treated by Dentistry, Pediatrics, Otorrhinolaryngology and Allergy services before they underwent partial glossectomy, which was performed by the same surgeon using the same surgical technique. When comparing oral and respiratory incidence before and after surgery, the reduction of both problems was significant. This paper proved the value of surgical treatment of macroglossia (partial glossectomy) to improve the quality of life of trisomic children.

Palabras clave : Down syndrome; trisomy 21; partial glossectomy; oral and respiratory infections.
