ROBAINA CASTELLANOS, Gerardo Rogelio; POLLO MEDINA, . Jesús Manuel; MORALES RIGAU, José Manuel  y  ROBAINA CASTELLANOS, Roberto E.. Multivariate analysis of prematurity risk factors in Matanzas. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2001, vol.27, n.1, pp. 62-69. ISSN 1561-3062.

The determination of prematurity risk factors is the first step towards prevention in a given population; so this paper is aimed at determining prematurity risk factors in our context. To this end, a retrospective analytical case-control study involving 486 live births born in 1998 in Matanzas´s provincial gynecoobstetric hospital was made. The sample was divided into two groups: a study group (243 preterm newborns) and a control group (243 term or posterm newborns. For determining the risk factors, an bivariate analysis followed by a multivariate analysis of logistic regression were made by using the EPI-Info system (Epi 6 version). As an impact measure, the attributable risk fraction was applied to each of the determined modifiable risk factors. Low educational level, the existence of olygohydramnios and twin pregnancy were the risk factors found. Anemia in pregnancy (OR 16.3, CI 2.1-126), bronchial asthma (OR 4.4, CI 1.2-16.4), premature rupture of membranes (OR 4.1- CI 1.7_9.9) and blood hypertension (OR 3.7, CI 1.8-7.4) were among the most important modifiable risk factors determined by multivariate analysis in the studied population. The modification of the aforementioned factors will have a favorable impact on the reduction of the incidence of preterm deliveries in our center and province.
