RODRIGUEZ GARCES, Carlos; ESPINOSA VALENZUELA, Denisse; PADILLA FUENTES, Geraldo y SUAZO RUIZ, Claudia. Between academic talent and socio-educational segmentation: university admission of Top 10% Ranking students in Chile. Rev. Cubana Edu. Superior [online]. 2022, vol.41, n.2 Epub 10-Mayo-2022. ISSN 0257-4314.
This paper analyzes the results of the 2018 university admission process in Chile of students belonging to the 10% with the best performance in their graduation schools (Top 10% ranking). Through a descriptive-correlational analysis of PSU scores and enrollment processes, we explore the incidence of school trajectory and socioeconomic profile components in the university access of talented students. The findings highlight the role of parental socio-cultural capital, PSU results and the quality of the school of graduation as factors of segmentation among Top 10% ranking students. The conclusions highlight the difficulties of the educational institution to incorporate added value in vulnerable students, even in spite of the talent deployed, as well as the need to incorporate public policy measures that promote effective access to higher education.
