Nursing research comprises the study of all the aspects, components and phenomena related to health, which are of interest for nurses. Research in the nursing sphere primarily focuses on patients and users so as to develop knowledge applicable to more than one person. It is widely know that since its inception, nursing has been interested in research. With Florence Nightingale, reforms were made and new research practices were introduced in nursing because she considered that systematic observation and gathering of information were necessary for this profession. For this reason, we are encouraged to assess and analyze the reflection on the conceptualization of research terms and aspects; describe type of research, the matching of project guide and protocole guide, and the methodological design, and list the challenges to be faced and strategies to be developed in nursing practice. A literature review was performed in whcih several references and experts´opinions were extensively examined. This may expand the knowkledge of research. This study was conducted from September to November 1999. Definitions are presented as part of the development of the paper. Charts are included to show variables and non-parametric tests. The most basic variables in the research fied are confirmed in this paper.
