Feeding is a chain of facts that covers from the growing, selection and preparation of the food to the forms of presentation and consumption of a group of them. There are diseases that may be prevented or improved with healthy feeding. The Epidemiological Picture of Cuba reveals the promotion of the consumption of a varied and balanced diet. A literature review was carried out in the second semester of the year 2002 and included several textbooks, journals and manuals as well as experts were consulted in this topic, with the objective of updating and substantiating the importance of healthy feeding, its interrelation with adequate nutrition, the variety of diet, and vegetables as main providers of vitamins, minerals, fibers and other necessary elements for the functioning of the body, the growth and development of physical and intellectual capacities of the individual. The Food Guides of Cuban Population aged over 2 years and the fundamental aspects of each of them as well as the different ways of production of vegetables in Cuba are offered in this paper. The nursing intervention in teaching the basic nutritional needs and in health promotion is also set forth. A classification of vegetables and fruits and their contribution in terms of vitamins and minerals is graphically presented.
