A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted to identify the learning needs of the nursing personnel in the community as regards the older adult care and to recommend an upgrading project in gerontological nursing for technicians and bachellors. This work was done at "Los Sitios" people's council, the "Reina" community teaching polyclinic and the gerontological complex, from January to December, 2003. 46 nursing professionals selected at random were surveyed. 12 of them were bachellors and 34 general nurses. In spite of the fact that they know the most frequent causes of morbidity and mortality in the older adult, both the general nurses and the bachellors answered in similar percentages that they needed to elevate their knowledge about Gerontology. These results allowed to propose an upgrading project for postgraduate courses aimed at complementing theoretical and practical studies in gerontological nursing.
